Content Security Policy: Tighten Website Scripts Without Breakage
CURRENT DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE

CSP is a mature browser defence with evolving implementation guidance. A policy must fit actual resources and hosting; reporting-only observation is not the same as enforced protection.

01 / WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

Use CSP as a deliberate browser boundary

Content Security Policy tells the browser which behaviours and resource loads a page allows. It can add defence against attacks such as script injection, but it does not replace safe input handling or application authorisation. Begin with the website’s actual resources and workflows. A pasted policy from another project may block legitimate forms, fonts or integrations while still permitting more than this site needs. This guide concerns a controlled rollout, not a claim that adding one header makes a website secure.

Inventory scripts, styles, images, frames and network destinations across representative templates. Include the contact form, payment or account flows where applicable, article pages and third-party widgets. A resource may load only after an interaction, so a home-page screenshot is an incomplete inventory. Identify who owns each dependency and whether it remains necessary. Removing a redundant widget can simplify the policy, but do not delete essential code merely to silence a violation message.

02 / WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

Observe a proposed policy before relying on it

A Content-Security-Policy-Report-Only response header can help observe violations without enforcing that proposed policy. Review supported reporting configuration and browser behaviour through current MDN and OWASP guidance. Reporting-only observation does not itself block the action. Where an enforced policy already exists, a proposed stricter reporting policy can be evaluated separately. Keep the distinction clear in project status so a test does not become an unsupported claim that the tighter rule is already protecting visitors.

Triage reports by the affected page and task. Some arise from legitimate resources the proposal omitted; others may come from extensions or unrelated client conditions. Do not add broad wildcard permissions just to make every report disappear. Reproduce important application failures and identify the dependency. Reports and logs can contain URLs or other context, so restrict collection and access appropriately. A large report volume is not automatically evidence that the site is under attack or that all entries require the same repair.

03 / WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

Handle approved inline code deliberately

Nonces or hashes can support a more deliberate script policy, depending on the site and delivery arrangement. A nonce needs an appropriately unpredictable per-response value and matching approved script markup; a fixed copied value is not the intended design. Hash-based handling depends on the exact approved content and its maintenance. Review current guidance and the build or server implementation. Avoid granting a nonce indiscriminately to user-controlled markup. The boundary must distinguish trusted application code from content that should not execute.

04 / WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

Worked example: a stricter policy breaks an enquiry

Imagine the proposed policy permits the site’s own scripts but omits the destination used by a form integration. The form looks correct, yet its request fails. During reporting and staging tests, identify the exact dependency and decide whether it belongs in the approved route. Add the narrow relevant rule or redesign the unnecessary integration, then test success and failure feedback. Do not resolve the issue by permitting every destination. This hypothetical case demonstrates how to preserve a useful customer task while tightening a boundary proportionately.

05 / WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

Enforce, verify and retain a controlled recovery path

Once the proposed policy is understood, enforce it through the supported delivery setup and test the actual response. Header and meta delivery do not support identical features, so choose deliberately. Check a direct article open, navigation, form submission and any approved frame or account flow. Review the console and applicable reports, but also confirm the receiving side of important interactions. A violation-free opening screen does not prove the rest of the website works.

Keep policy changes versioned with a responsible owner and a rollback plan. New analytics, fonts or embedded tools can change the resource contract, so review them before release. Avoid weakening the entire policy for one undocumented addition. Record what was tested and what protection the enforced rules actually provide. CSP is most useful as a maintained defence within broader secure development, with understandable exceptions and dependable customer journeys rather than a one-time header copied to satisfy a checklist.

Include a page that uses a different template in the enforcement sample. An article may have no embedded frame while a contact page does. Check the effective policy on both responses and the actual frame behaviour. A successful article review should not be extrapolated into a claim that every template shares identical resource needs.

Practical checklist

  • Inventory resources across real tasks.
  • Keep report-only and enforced status distinct.
  • Review nonce or hash handling carefully.
  • Test forms and approved integrations after enforcement.

Frequently asked questions

Should all violations be fixed by allowing their source?

No. Investigate whether the resource is legitimate and necessary. A narrow justified exception is different from a wildcard added to silence reports, which can weaken the intended boundary.
