Start with a website you own or are authorised to edit. Examples are teaching exercises; search rankings and traffic results are not guaranteed.

What you will learn

Structured data describes information on a page in a machine-readable form. The useful first step is choosing a type that genuinely matches the content, not adding every schema you can find. This lesson covers selection, accurate values, implementation and validation. A valid example can support eligibility for certain search features, but it does not guarantee that a rich result will appear or that the page will rank above competing answers.

1. Choose a type that fits the actual page

Start with the visible purpose: an article, product, organisation detail or another supported experience. Review Google’s current documentation for the search feature you want to support, because general vocabulary support and Google feature eligibility are not identical. A beginner article should not pretend to be a product listing simply because a product example contains stars. Write down the type, the visible information it represents and the relevant official instructions before generating markup.

2. Collect accurate values from the content

Prepare a small data sheet with the title, canonical URL, relevant image, author or business identity and any type-specific properties. Use real values that agree with what visitors can see. Do not invent ratings, review counts, prices or qualifications to make the output look impressive. If a fact changes often, identify the system that owns it. A product price copied manually into markup can become inconsistent with the page unless the publishing process keeps both values aligned.

3. Implement through a maintainable source

JSON-LD is a common supported format and can be generated by a template or content system. Keep one clear source of truth for shared identity fields and page-specific values. Escape content correctly so a quotation mark in a headline does not break the data. Avoid installing multiple components that output competing descriptions of the same item without coordination. A small, accurate implementation is easier to maintain than a large pasted block containing fields nobody can explain or verify.

4. Validate syntax and feature requirements

Check that the JSON parses, then use the relevant structured-data testing tool for supported search features. Read errors and warnings in context; valid syntax alone does not establish eligibility. Compare the rendered page with the marked-up values and test the live URL after deployment. A development preview can differ from the published page. If the feature has additional policies, review those as well. Keep the test date and example URL so later changes can be compared against a known implementation.

5. Monitor and maintain the information

Include structured data in the checklist when templates, URLs, images or business details change. Review available enhancement reports for supported features, but recognise that not every type creates its own visible report. A missing rich result is not automatically a technical error. Investigate consistency and eligibility rather than repeatedly adding more properties. Remove unsupported claims and obsolete values promptly. The markup should remain an accurate description of the current page, not a record of what the page used to say.

Worked example

For a fictional tutorial, use accurate article information such as the real headline, page URL and publisher identity. Validate the data and compare it with the visible heading and byline. Do not add a five-star rating unless a genuine supported rating context exists and the applicable rules are met. Correctness and transparency come before decorative search ambitions.

Your practical exercise

  1. Choose one page and one appropriate supported type.
  2. Map each planned property to a visible or verifiable fact.
  3. Validate the data and inspect the published page.
  4. Add a maintenance check for URLs, identity and changing facts.
Keep this evidence in your learning log

Save the page URL, the observed problem, your proposed change, the publication date and the check you performed. Record real report data separately from examples or expectations.

Frequently asked questions

Does valid schema guarantee rich results?

No. It can help establish eligibility when requirements are met, but display is not guaranteed.

Can I add ratings just to get stars?

Do not invent ratings or misuse a type. Markup must accurately represent the content and comply with the relevant feature rules.
