What you will learn
Marketing analytics should help a team answer a question, not simply produce a dashboard. GA4 is one tool for understanding website and app interactions when it is configured appropriately. Start by defining the business action and the evidence needed to recognise it. This lesson explains a beginner workflow for planning events, checking a setup and interpreting reports. It does not assume that installing a tag proves every enquiry, sale or customer journey has been measured correctly.
Write a measurement plan in plain language
List the decisions the business needs to make and the interactions that can inform them. For a service site, this might include successful enquiry submission, opening a contact option and viewing a relevant guide. Define each event precisely, identify its technical trigger and assign an owner. Separate supporting interest from the primary action. Include a test method and a known limitation for each item. A measurement plan should be understandable to the person receiving enquiries, not only the person implementing tags.
Understand the property, stream and installation
An authorised team should confirm the correct Analytics property and website data stream, then review how the tag is installed. A direct tag and a tag manager can coexist in a wider setup, but the same measurement should not be installed twice accidentally. Record which system controls each event. Use current Google setup guidance and appropriate consent behaviour. Do not change a production account solely to match a tutorial screenshot; first understand the existing implementation and access responsibilities.
Distinguish events, parameters and key events
An event represents an interaction, and parameters provide relevant context. Important actions can be designated as key events in the measurement setup. Use documented recommended events when they fit the interaction, with the required context, instead of inventing inconsistent names across pages. Avoid sending personal information such as a customer’s email address in event names, page URLs or parameters. A button click and a successfully accepted form submission are different moments and should not be confused in the report.
Tag external campaigns consistently
Use a documented naming convention for campaign links so the team can understand where visits came from. A simple planning example is utm_source=newsletter, utm_medium=email and utm_campaign=website_checklist. Keep spelling and case consistent within the convention. Do not attach external campaign tags to ordinary internal site links, because that can confuse the interpretation of acquisition. Never place personal customer information in a tagged URL. Test that the destination still opens correctly before distributing the link.
Test the event under realistic conditions
Use available diagnostic views and authorised test traffic to check that an event fires at the intended moment and only as often as expected. Test an unsuccessful form, a successful form and a repeat action separately. Confirm that a tag does not register a lead before the server accepts the submission. Note filters, consent choices, blockers and reporting delays that may affect what appears. Keep a short test log rather than assuming a tag is correct because a single event appeared once.
Build a report around a question and a decision
A useful report states the period, audience scope, important change, evidence, interpretation and next action. Compare appropriate periods and explain known data limitations. Do not add totals from systems with different definitions as if they were identical. Website events can support an enquiry review, but business records may be needed to confirm qualified leads or completed sales. If a number moves unexpectedly, check tracking and operational changes before declaring that a channel has improved or failed.
Worked example: separating contact interest from an enquiry
A website has a WhatsApp button and a contact form. The plan records a WhatsApp link click as contact interest because it cannot prove a conversation happened. It records the form event only after a successful submission is confirmed. The business separately reviews whether accepted enquiries match the service. A weekly report shows visits to the service page, contact interest, successful forms and the number of enquiries reviewed by staff. Each number keeps its own definition; none is silently renamed sales. Any sample figures used in training should be explicitly labelled illustrative.
Practice: turn the lesson into a working draft
Create an event worksheet with action, name, trigger, owner, test and limitation. Test one action without sending real customer information. Then draft a report paragraph that explains what the event proves and what would require confirmation from the business.
Review your work
- Correct property and stream identified
- One documented owner for each tag
- Primary action differs from supporting clicks
- Events tested for timing and duplication
- Report definitions and limitations visible
Frequently asked questions
Does installing GA4 measure all business results automatically?
No. Important interactions may need deliberate implementation and testing, while qualified leads and sales can require confirmation outside Analytics.
Is a key event always a sale?
No. A key event is an action the measurement plan considers important. Define what it represents and avoid treating a contact action as completed revenue.
Why can two reports show different numbers?
Scope, definitions, attribution, filters, consent and timing can differ. Compare the settings and the question each report answers before assuming one is wrong.
