What you will learn

Competitor analysis helps you understand the alternatives customers may consider. It does not reveal another business’s private conversion rate, profitability or complete strategy. Review observable information, compare it consistently and use it to identify questions your own business should answer. The output is a short opportunity list, not a collection of copied headlines and screenshots presented as a plan.

Choose relevant alternatives

Include businesses that solve a similar problem for a comparable audience, plus alternatives such as doing the work internally. A famous national brand may have different resources and buying conditions from a local provider. State why each example belongs in the comparison. Keep the set manageable enough to inspect the entire enquiry journey rather than only the home page.

Use a consistent observation sheet

Record the offer, scope explanation, proof, content topics, contact routes and important conditions. Include the page URL and review date. Distinguish what you saw from what you inferred. A public price may omit context; a visible advertisement does not prove profitable delivery. Do not fill gaps with guesses merely because an empty spreadsheet cell looks incomplete.

Inspect the customer task

Review whether a visitor can understand the service, compare options and know what happens next. Note useful explanations and unclear transitions. Test only ordinary public navigation; do not submit misleading enquiries or attempt to access private information. The goal is to understand the public experience a customer sees, not to impersonate a prospect or interfere with another business.

Identify a credible difference

Look for a customer question your business can answer more clearly or a process it can explain more honestly. Verify that the team can deliver the proposed difference. If support arrangements are genuinely stronger, describe the actual arrangement rather than using vague superiority claims. An opportunity is useful only when it matches customer needs and your operational capacity.

Prioritise improvements over imitation

Rank ideas by customer value, evidence, effort and ability to maintain them. Create your own wording, visuals and examples. Keep a separate list of research questions that require more evidence. Review competitors periodically, but do not redesign every page whenever someone else changes a banner. Your plan should remain connected to your own audience and offer.

Worked example: competitor research worksheet

A local agency compares three relevant alternatives and a do-it-yourself platform. Its worksheet shows that customers may struggle to understand ongoing ownership and renewal responsibilities. The agency confirms its own process and writes an original explanation covering access, maintenance and handover. It does not claim competitors provide poor support based on missing website text, and it does not assume a visible ad proves commercial success.

Practice: turn the lesson into a working draft

Compare three alternatives using six observable criteria. Label each entry observation or interpretation. Select one customer question your site can answer better, verify the answer internally and draft an original improvement brief.

Frequently asked questions

Can competitor tools show exact traffic?

Third-party estimates have limits and may differ from private analytics. Label estimates and avoid treating them as audited business results.

Is copying a successful-looking layout a strategy?

No. Appearance does not reveal the full context or performance. Use the research to understand customer questions, then create a suitable original solution.

What should I keep in my learning portfolio?

Save your working brief, completed exercise and review notes. Explain the decisions you made, identify assumptions and distinguish a proposed test from results you actually measured.
